Information on the conditions of the right to vote and the right to be elected

The right to vote in municipal self-government bodies

Citizens of the Slovak Republic and foreigners have the right to vote for municipal self-government bodies, who has a permanent residence in the village (hereinafter referred to as "village resident") and will complete on the day of the election at the latest 18 years of age.

An obstacle to the right to vote is the limitation of personal freedom established by law for reasons of public health protection, unless a special law provides otherwise during a pandemic.

The right to be elected to municipal self-government bodies

For a municipal deputy (urban) councils, in Bratislava, the capital of the Slovak Republic, and the local council in the city of Košice, a village resident can be elected, who has a permanent residence in the village, in which he is a candidate and will complete on the day of the election at the latest 18 years of age.

For the mayor of the village, the mayor of the city, a resident of the municipality can be elected mayor of the town district, who has a permanent residence in the village and will complete it on the day of the election at the latest 25 years of age.

It is an obstacle to the right to be elected

  • serving a prison sentence,
  • valid conviction for an intentional crime, if the conviction was not expunged,
  • deprivation of legal capacity.
